So why is the Boat Called the African Queen ?
“ Well, I have two answers for this actually ...
“ The first one, which most can guess, is after the Humphrey Bogart 1951 classic, The African Queen. Although we did not know this at the time, parts of the film were shot in Dalyan in Turkey. They have beautiful rivers there and although the film was supposed to be set in Africa, much of it was filmed in Dalyan. Our boat was made in Turkey so this is a nice link.
“ The second reason is that my wife, Sidi, is originally from Kenya - she is my African Queen ... !! ”
Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester, The African Queen is a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure.
Humphrey Bogart stars in his Oscar-winning portrayal of Charlie Allnut, the slovenly, gin-swilling Captain of a tramp steamer called the African Queen, which ships supplies to small East African villages during World War I.
Katerine Hepburn plays Rose Sayer, the maiden-lady sister of a British missionary (Robert Morley).
When invading Germans kill the missionary and level the village, Allnut offers to take Rose back to civilization. She can’t tolerate his drinking or bad manners; he isn’t crazy about her imperious, and judgmental attitude either. However it does not take long before their passionate dislike turns to love.
Together, the disparate duo work to ensure their survival on the treacherous waters and divise an ingenious way to destroy a German gunboat. The African Queen may well be the perfect adventure film, its roller-coaster storyline complemented by the chemistry between its stars ...
