Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia. The total area of the island is 9,250sq km, the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus is one third of this area (3,355sq km), with approximately half of the island’s coast within it’s borders.
Average annual temperature is approx 20°C with hot summers reaching up to 40°C and mild winters averaging 10°C. The Sea temperatures are the warmest in the Mediterranean, ranging from a mean average of 16°C in January to 32°C in August.
North Cyprus is neighbours with Turkey (65 km to the North), Syria and Lebanon (112 km to the East), South Cyprus, Egypt (418 km to the South), and Greece (965 km to the West).
The unique Mediterranean climate of Cyprus plays an important role in its natural richness. The most widespread forest trees are pines, cypress, oak trees and eucalyptus. Besides citrus trees such as oranges, bitter-oranges, lemons, tangerines and grapefruits, there also are watermelons, vegetables, olive trees and carrob trees in Cyprus.
Cyprus has a rich variety of animals. The landscape is ideal for stockbreeding (goats and sheep). Because of its geographical location, it is a center for stop over and laying eggs for birds migrating between Africa and Eastern Europe. Seven kinds out of 350 that are present on the island are endemic. There are also 26 different kinds of reptiles and amphibiums in Cyprus. There are around 250 wild donkeys in the National Park at the Karpaz peninsula. The unique coasts of North Cyprus are ideal for the Caretta Caretta and Chelonia Mydas turtles which nest each year on the beaches especially in Alagadi, East of Kyrenia.
Cyprus, the mythical Birthplace of Aphrodite, goddess of love, is the Jewel of the Mediteranean.
She boasts some of the most interesting Historical Sites in the Med.
